Deuteronomy is a much more important and
powerful book than most people realize. it is the book that Jesus quoted
exclusively to Satan to defeat Him when Satan tried to tempt the
Lord.
If you read Deuteronomy 27 -30 you will see
an interesting story.
The Lord divided the tribes
upon two hills, Ebal and Gerizim. He had those on the mounts speak "with a loud
voice" (holler fer all you Rebels). Those on Gerizim read aloud the BLESSINGS
that would result from obeying the Lord. Those on Ebal shouted the CURSES and
the results of those curses should Israel disobey the
Lord.
Notice how careful the instructions are
given:
Deu 27:1 And Moses with the elders of Israel commanded the
people, saying, Keep *ALL* the commandments which I command you this
day.
Pretty important to heed ALL of the
commandments, since they would reap directly from them.
Deu 27:3 & 8 And thou shalt write upon them *ALL* the *WORDS* of this law, 8 And thou
shalt write upon the stones *ALL* the *WORDS* of this law
VERY PLAINLY.
They were to write down ALL the
WORDS very PLAINLY. Understandable, since they would be judged by them (John
12:48). These chapters are the very plain words which they had to write and
then read aloud.
Read those blessings and curses.
If they got ONE wrong, it could result in disaster and death both individually
and nationally. The individual WORDS were absolutely VITAL.
Deu 28:1 And
it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the
LORD thy God, to observe and to do *ALL* his commandments which I command
thee this day, that the LORD thy God will set thee on high above all nations
of the earth: [also see 28:15]
Look at this
one:
Deu 28:14 And thou shalt not go aside from *ANY* of the *WORDS*
which I command thee this day, to the right hand, or to the left, to go after
other gods to serve them.
If they went aside
from ANY of the WORDS, the curses would be applied. They were not to follow
just the "general idea" but ALL the WORDS. Not only that, but they had to
WRITE them first. There is NO margin of error in the WORDS of these chapters
in Deuteronomy. If what they WROTE had ANY spurious words, it was potentially
less than worthless. These are the words that became part of the book of
Deuteronomy.
For the NIV/ASV/RSV/ETC advocates who
missed it, God reiterates:
Deu 28:58 If thou wilt not observe to do
*ALL* the *WORDS* of this law that are written in this book, that thou mayest
fear this glorious and fearful name, THE LORD THY GOD; [also see
29:29]
Not the genre of the text, but ALL the
WORDS. For the NKJV/NASV/TR advocates who still refuse to read the
PLAIN WORDS, Joshua gave a similar account when he came to the same
mountains:
Josh 8:31-35 As Moses the servant of the LORD commanded the
children of Israel, as it is WRITTEN in the book of the law of Moses, an
altar of whole stones, over which no man hath lift up any iron: and they
offered thereon burnt offerings unto the LORD, and sacrificed peace
offerings. 32 And he WROTE there upon the stones a COPY of the law of Moses,
which he wrote in the presence of the children of Israel. 33 And all Israel,
and their elders, and officers, and their judges, stood on this side the ark
and on that side before the priests the Levites, which bare the ark of
the covenant of the LORD, as well the stranger, as he that was born among
them; half of them over against mount Gerizim, and half of them over
against mount Ebal; as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded before,
that they should bless the people of Israel. 34 And afterward he read *ALL*
the *WORDS* of the law, the blessings and cursings, *according* to *ALL*
that IS *WRITTEN in the book of the law. 35 There was *NOT A WORD* of all
that Moses commanded, which Joshua read not before all the congregation
of Israel, with the women, and the little ones, and the strangers that
were conversant among them.
Several things can
be seen here:
* The INDIVIDUAL WORDS are absolutely vital.
* The
WORDS in Deuteronomy were indeed part of the law - God's inspired word. They
are the pure words which they hollered on the mounts and they are the pure
words we can read today.
* The true COPY that Joshua made was PERFECT
down to the individual WORDS. Even though he read from his COPY, which was
*according* to the law of Moses, it included ALL that was WRITTEN in Moses'
law and NOT A WORD was missing or wrong.
Then
read how the account concludes:
Deu 30:11-14 For this commandment which
I command thee this day, it is NOT HIDDEN from thee [in the original
autographs], neither is it far off [ancient manuscripts]. 12 It is not in
heaven, that thou shouldest say, Who shall go up for us to heaven, and bring
it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it? 13 Neither is it beyond the sea
[Greek & Hebrew], that thou shouldest say, Who shall go over the sea for
us, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it? 14 But the WORD is
VERY NIGH unto thee [King James Bible!], in thy mouth, and in thy HEART, that
thou mayest do it [knowing it is the easy part, DOING it is tougher].
